Ahead 2027: Datti Dumps Labour Party for PRP

By Kamsi Anayo

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has defected to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), in a move that could reshape early permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Datti disclosed the decision during a televised interview, stating that his exit from the LP would take effect immediately after the day of his announcement.

The former lawmaker cited internal crises and a departure from the founding ideals of the Labour Party as the major reasons for his decision.

According to him, the PRP better aligns with his ideological leanings, particularly on governance, social justice and people-centred policies.

His move comes amid lingering leadership disputes within the LP, which have raised concerns among party loyalists and political observers.

The defection is expected to trigger fresh conversations around coalition-building and opposition realignment as Nigeria gradually inches toward the next election cycle.

However, neither the Labour Party nor the PRP had issued detailed official statements at the time of filing this report.

Insiders suggest that more high-profile political movements could follow in the coming months.
