The Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved the appointment of Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of the state.

The confirmation was made during plenary following his nomination by Governor Douye Diri, in line with constitutional provisions guiding the replacement of a deputy governor.

Akpe’s appointment comes in the wake of the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who slumped and died in December 2025.

He was laid to rest on January 30, 2026, in his hometown of Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area.

Before his nomination, Akpe, served as Chief of Staff to Governor Diri, a role in which he was considered a close aide to the governor.

With the Assembly’s approval, Akpe is expected to be sworn in shortly, restoring the state’s executive arm to its full constitutional composition.
