The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, the annual celebration marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Friday through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Congratulating Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, the minister urged citizens to embrace the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
According to him, Eid ul Mawlid provides an opportunity for reflection on virtues that promote harmony and national development.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to use the Eid ul Mawlid celebration to pray for peace, unity and continued progress across the country.
He stressed the importance of national cohesion, noting that preserving peace and strengthening unity remain collective responsibilities.
The minister further encouraged citizens to celebrate the occasion with moderation, mutual respect and consideration for one another.
He wished Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the commitment of the administration to safeguarding lives and property while sustaining peace and security nationwide.
