FG Shuts Owerri Airport for 25 Days for Runway Rehabilitation

Fidelia Soriwei, Abuja

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow for runway repairs and extension ahead of the 2026 Christmas travel season.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the development on Friday, stating that the closure would commence on October 20, 2026, following consultations involving the Federal Government, the Imo State Government and aviation stakeholders in the South-East.

Keyamo said the decision followed a discussion with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and was necessary to address runway defects, improve aviation safety and prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic during the festive period.

The rehabilitation will cover deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, surface cracks, potholes and resurfacing, alongside the planned runway extension.

According to the minister, the project will be executed through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in collaboration with the Imo State Government to restore the runway to a safer and more reliable operational condition.

“When completed, these works are expected to restore the runway to a safer and more reliable operational condition and improve its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements,” Keyamo said.

He explained that the timing was important because passenger numbers and flight movements to Owerri traditionally increase during the Christmas season, making it necessary to ensure that airport infrastructure meets safety and operational requirements.

The minister acknowledged that the temporary airport closure would inconvenience passengers and other users but urged them to cooperate with the authorities, stressing that aviation safety remained a priority.

Keyamo advised passengers scheduled to fly through Owerri during the closure to contact their airlines for information on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.

He added that the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated through official aviation channels.

The minister also assured passengers and aviation stakeholders that the Federal Government would continue engaging the Imo State Government, airlines and other relevant parties to coordinate the rehabilitation and minimise disruptions.

Keyamo commended Uzodimma and the Imo State Government for their cooperation, describing the partnership as an important step towards upgrading aviation infrastructure and supporting economic growth in the South-East.
