President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has concluded every necessary arrangements to address a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on June 12 and will also deliver a national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF), Sen. George Akume, disclosed this while inaugurating a committee saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the anniversary activities in Abuja, Tuesday.
With just one week, three days to the event, Akume enjoined the committee members to get to work without further delay.
The celebrations will span an entire week, featuring a press conference on June 4, Friday prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, and a gala night to round off the occasion on June 12 itself.
According to the SGF, given the current economic climate and the government’s commitment to spending responsibly, this year’s commemoration would be kept relatively low-key.
Senator Akume sincerely acknowledged the heroes of the June 12, 1993 pro-democracy struggle, particularly the late MKO Abiola, describing their sacrifices as the bedrock of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He explained that the occasion would serve as an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to highlight the progress it has made in strengthening democratic institutions and pushing forward its reform agenda despite economic headwinds.
The inter-ministerial committee overseeing the event draws comprises ministers, security chiefs, and senior presidential aides.
It is responsible for the planning and execution of all approved activities for the celebration.
