Kwankwaso Dumps NNPP, Signals Political Realignment Ahead of 2027

A former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, citing the need for political realignment amid shifting dynamics in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Kwankwaso, who was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, announced his resignation in a statement issued on Sunday.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect,” he said.

The former governor described his exit as a difficult decision, given his longstanding association with the party, but noted that prevailing political realities necessitated a strategic shift.

“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.

Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the party leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees and supporters across all levels.

He also acknowledged the loyalty of members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, urging continued collaboration toward national development.

“We shall continue to work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.

While Kwankwaso did not officially disclose his next political destination, indications suggest he may be heading to the African Democratic Congress.

Party sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the former governor is expected to formally declare for the ADC in Kano.

Top figures within the party, including National Chairman David Mark and Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, are reportedly preparing to receive him.

There are also indications that Kwankwaso may be joined by key allies, including former Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.

Political Consultations Intensify.

The development comes amid heightened political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Over the weekend, Kwankwaso held talks with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja.

Atiku, in a post on X, described the meeting as a “courtesy visit” during which both leaders engaged in discussions on the state of the nation.

Political observers say Kwankwaso’s defection could reshape alliances within the opposition and influence the emerging configuration ahead of the next electoral cycle.
