A mining pit collapsed in Tangur community, Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, killing four miners.
A youth leader in Bokkos, Christopher Luka, confirmed the incident to journalists in Jos on Wednesday.
According to him, the pit collapsed on Tuesday evening while the victims were working inside the tunnel.
Luka said the victims included two men and two women.
He said, “Yes, the incident actually happened yesterday while they were inside the tunnel. Two are women while the other two are men. It is unfortunate. One was buried on Tuesday because he was a Muslim, while the other three were buried today because they were Christians.”
Another resident of the community, Maren Jacob, also confirmed the incident.
Jacob said the victims were engaged in sand excavation from a pit located around a riverbank in the community, adding that the bodies were recovered on Tuesday.
It was gathered that many miners have lost their lives as a result of pit collapses, and despite the state government’s ban on illegal mining, people continue to engage in mining activities.
Just last month, in August 2026, seven miners lost their lives after a mining pit collapsed in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State.
